Easily Remove Common Carpet Stains

From that brand new white rug, to those beige carpet tiles, your domestic carpet tiles flooring is bound to fall victim to spills, drops and accidents from time to time. Luckily, many of these common carpet stains can be easily removed at home.

Here we look at five common domestic and commercial carpet tiles stains and how to remove them:

Red Wine

Spilling red wine on your beige carpet tiles or white rug seems irreversible (and not just because of the waste of your favourite tipple)!

Before you panic buy an entire new floor, try out this quick and easy method to remove red wine out of carpet:

  1. Act quickly. Try not to let the wine set in the carpet as it will be harder to get the stain out.
  2. Soak up the excess liquid using a clean towel or cloth.
  3. Treat the area using a D.I.Y carpet cleaning solution. Some good solutions for treating red wine stains are baking soda, vinegar and water or white wine (to dilute the red wine).
  4. Continue blotting until the stain has been lifted.

Tip: The most important thing to do is ACT FAST. Red wine really can leave it's mark, so it's best to deal with it quickly.

Oh and pour yourself a new glass to reward yourself (white wine only this time)!

Blood

Blood stains on a carpet should be treated as soon as possible - a dried bloodstain set in your carpet is even more difficult to remove.

Here's how to get blood out of carpet:

  1. Mix a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with a cup of cold water (You should always use cold water when treating blood spills).
  2. Blot directly on the blood stain, using a clean, white cloth dipped in the liquid.
  3. Repeat as necessary.
  4. Use a dry cloth to blot the area dry.

Tip: Avoid scrubbing the stained area. This may make it spread further. Blotting will transfer the bloodstain from the carpet onto the cloth.

Pet Stains

You may think having pets means it's harder to keep a carpet clean. But carpet tiles and pets are very compatible in the home.Pet stains and pet hair are fairly easy to get out of your carpet.

To get pet urine stains out of a carpet:

  1. Blot the urine stain with a clean cloth / paper towels to soak up any excess liquid.
  2. Mix a ¼ teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with a cup of warm water.
  3. Pour or spray the carpet cleaning solution directly onto the stain.
  4. Let the solution set in.
  5. Rinse the area with warm water. Blot dry using a cloth or paper towels.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 until the stain has disappeared.

Tip: Use baking soda on the area to get rid of the strong smell.

Coffee / Tea

As a nation of coffee and tea lovers, it is inevitable that you'll occasionally spill your favourite caffeinated beverage on the carpet. Treat the tea or coffee stain quickly and you'll be free to carry on dunking those biccies in your brew:

  1. Blot the liquid with a clean towel or cloth to soak up any excess fluid.
  2. Treat the carpet with a natural cleaning solution such as white vinegar and water.
  3. Blot dry.

Tip: You may find a carpet shampoo helps get rid of dried in stains.

Ink

Ink stains in carpet can be nasty and there is a high risk of it becoming permanent. Like all stains, the faster you act, the higher chance you have of removing it.

  1. Blot the ink stain with non-oily hairspray or Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol.
  2. You should see the ink colour transfer from the carpet onto the cloth.
  3. Once the stain has gone, dab the area using clean, lukewarm water.

Tip: Have carpet tiles? Carpet tiles are easy to clean as you only have to replace or clean the specific stained tiles rather than the entire floor when any damages or spillages occur. Find out some more advantages of having carpet tiles.
